IT ALL STARTED IN 2016...
IN THE BEGINNING...
It all started with an off-the-cuff comment: "I drive to Toronto to go to Whole Foods. There's nowhere to get good produce downtown." Montana and Lucas heard that from a family friend when they were visiting Cobourg in the summer of 2016. They'd come to Cobourg for the summer to spend some time with family after they had welcomed their baby boy into the world. They fell in love with the community but it was true: there was nowhere to get fresh produce in the downtown core. And with a newborn in tow, having to drive every time they needed healthy food options or groceries was inconvenient and unsustainable. After a little research, they found out that in the 2013 Downtown Cobourg Revitalization Project survey, over 50% of Cobourg residents said they wanted some form of grocery store downtown.
And Montana and Lucas thought, "We could do that." And The Market & Smør was born.
IT TOOK A PATIENCE BUT IT WAS WORTH IT...
Montana and Lucas flew back home to Alberta where they had been for the past 10 years and started to plan. After countless meetings, research, planning and development, they sold their home, their vehicles and most of their possessions and moved to Cobourg, intent on finding a space and opening up The Market.
Once they arrived back in Cobourg in December 2016, they found that this was much more challenging than they initially thought. But they didn't let that stop them. They rallied the community together for Market Meetings to find out what Cobourg residents needed from a downtown market. They met with council and community members. And they were relentless in their search. They knew they had to open for May 2017 because they understood that Cobourg is a tourist town; to be successful, you need to be operational during the summer months.
BECAUSE THE OPPORTUNITIES PRESENTED THEMSELVES...
But then April, 2017 came around. The Market was not going to have a home in time to open for the summer. Montana and Lucas were going to have to find a way to adapt and not lose their focus of bringing healthy foods to Cobourg. Then they found out that, for the first time in 12 years, the town was accepting bids to operate the canteen on Cobourg's beautiful beach. Montana and Lucas decided to submit a bid with a focus on bringing healthy, fresh foods to the beach. The town really responded to their vision, and in the end, they won.
Montana, Lucas and the incredible team they brought together operated the canteen and a food truck on the beach for the summer of 2017. They loved getting to know Cobourg's beach lovers, and are looking forward to being back on the beach in the summer of 2018.
This opportunity gifted them the time to get to know their community in a deeper sense, get their name out out there and to look for an appropriate location for The Market.
PRESENT DAY HAS US EXCITED!
Today The Market & Smør has a home at 39 King St. East, right in the downtown core of beautiful Cobourg! Lucas and a small team of helpers works diligently creating the space with his own hands, and Montana gears up to open the beach operations for the second year.
The team is so proud and so excited to have a home for The Market, to provide quality produce and healthy to-go options for locals and visitors alike.
